Conrad says in A Personal Record that he first learned English when he was eight years old and his father was translating the works of Shakespeare and Victor Hugo to make money for the family. In 1865, his wife died from tuberculosis, which was made worse by the harsh climate. His wife and 4-year-old son went with him. He was arrested at the end of 1861 and sent to live in Vologda, which is in the north of Russia. He was also one of the people who set up the committee that led the Polish rebellion against Russian rule in 1863.
